EP 3 - Lyman Medeiros

In Episode 3 of The Bass Shed Podcast, Ryan Roberts sits down with Los Angeles bassist Lyman Medeiros to talk about his path from classical training to the professional jazz world and what it takes to build a sustainable career as a working musician.

Lyman shares stories from his early years growing up in Indiana and studying classical bass before discovering jazz. A pivotal moment came when he saw legendary bassist Ray Brown perform live — an experience that helped shape his decision to pursue jazz more seriously.

The conversation explores Lyman’s academic journey, including completing his undergraduate studies in classical bass and later transitioning to jazz for his Master’s degree at USC Thornton School of Music.

Ryan and Lyman also discuss the realities of working in the Los Angeles music scene — balancing performance, teaching, networking, and the business side of music. Lyman shares insights from his long-running gig with jazz vocalist Steve Tyrell, eventually becoming Tyrell’s musical director, and what he’s learned from sustaining a professional touring relationship over many years.

The conversation also touches on Lyman’s work as an educator, including teaching positions at Musicians Institute and Fullerton College. He reflects on how technology, online resources, and changing student habits have reshaped how young musicians approach learning today.

Lyman also talks about his creative projects, including his work with Black Market Research, as well as plans for new original music and an upcoming trio record.

It’s a thoughtful conversation about career development, musical growth, and the realities of building a life in music — from the practice room to the bandstand.
