About The Bass Shed

Art. Craft. Culture. For Every Bassist.

A Space Built by Bassists, for Bassists

The Bass Shed was created by bassist and educator Ryan Roberts to contribute something new to both the bass guitar and double bass communities — a space where players can grow, connect, and give back through the shared language of music.

What began as a podcast has grown into a boutique platform dedicated to the full experience of being a bassist.
Here, artistry meets education, and culture meets community — blending inspiration, information, and impact under one roof.

Whether you play upright or electric, The Bass Shed is designed to help you learn, refine your craft, and connect with a global community of low-end thinkers and groove makers.

What Makes The Bass Shed Different

Most platforms focus on either how to play or who plays.
The Bass Shed does both.

It’s where lessons, stories, and conversations come together to celebrate the full artistry of the instrument — and the people who play it.

  • 🎓 The Bass Shed Academy (Nonprofit)
The educational heart of The Bass Shed. The Academy provides lessons, transcriptions, and workshops for both bass guitarists and double bassists, helping players develop technical mastery and musical awareness.
Every membership or purchase supports youth music education, scholarships, and creative outreach through the Academy’s nonprofit mission.

  • 🎧 The Bass Shed Podcast
In-depth conversations with bassists, builders, and artists from across genres — exploring their journeys, philosophies, and contributions to the culture of bass.

  • ⚒️ The Bass Shed Platform
The home for Low Down gear reviews, Shed Mindset articles, the Listening Lab, and Bass Bites, offering resources for practice, tone, and artistry — whether you’re holding an upright or an electric.

Together, these create a living ecosystem where every groove, every story, and every lesson strengthens the bond between the bass guitar and double bass communities — one sound, one shared foundation.

About Ryan Roberts

Ryan Roberts is a bassist, educator, composer, and podcast host based in Los Angeles.
He is the founder of The Bass Shed and The Bass Shed Academy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing music education and creative access for youth.

Ryan’s career bridges performance, composition, and education — from recording and touring to teaching at the Los Angeles College of Music (LACM), where he developed the curriculum for the Master’s Program in Double Bass Performance.
He also teaches in public school programs across Southern California, sharing his passion for musical literacy and creative growth with the next generation.

As a bandleader, Ryan has released two albums of original music — the 2021 release Smile and the 2025 release Echoes of Change — each highlighting his voice on both bass guitar and double bass and his commitment to expressive, story-driven composition.
He arranged music for the award-winning short film Funky Butt and composed and performed the original feature-length soundtrack for The Show Can’t Go On, written entirely for double bass.

As a session musician, Ryan has recorded and performed with artists and producers including:

  • Geoff Emerick (The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney) – contributing bass tracks rooted in vintage tone and modern sensibility.

  • Segal Huérédia (Latin Grammy–recognized arranger and producer) – performing on jazz, pop, and Latin fusion projects.

  • Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) (home to Kendrick Lamar, SZA, and Anderson .Paak collaborators) – recording bass for Los Angeles–based studio sessions.

Beyond performance and education, Ryan is also a writer for Bass Magazine Online, contributing articles and interviews that explore artistry, craft, and culture within the bass community.

He also gives back to the community and young musicians by serving as a music coach for the bass section in Burbank High School’s String Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble, and as a rhythm section coach for the school’s Jazz Band.
Additionally, he is a coach at Muir Middle School in Burbank, working with students in the Beginning Strings Program and Orchestra, helping young bassists develop strong fundamentals and musical confidence.

Guided by the philosophy of “learning from the legends,” Ryan believes that true musicianship grows from both heritage and innovation — studying the greats, refining the craft, and using that foundation to find your own voice.

Through The Bass Shed and The Bass Shed Academy, he continues to build a community where bass guitarists and double bassists come together to grow, learn, and give back — uniting the low-end world through artistry, education, and service.
