Bob Babbitt — “Scorpio” (excerpt)

Bassline & Solo (Excerpt)

Bob Babbitt’s performance on “Scorpio” is a masterclass in controlled intensity. The groove is built on tightly articulated 16th notes that never rush — they sit just behind the pulse, creating weight and forward motion at the same time. That subtle pocket placement is what gives the line its authority.

Notice how the repetition isn’t mechanical. Small variations in articulation and note length keep the pattern alive, especially when the line locks with the drums. The feel is disciplined but relaxed — a defining characteristic of Detroit session playing in the early ’70s.

The solo section shifts the energy without abandoning the groove. Instead of overplaying, Babbitt builds momentum through rhythmic phrasing and smart note choice, expanding the line while staying rooted in the pocket.
